I am having a very similar problem with orphaned deltas left by CommVault Sympana ver. 9 SP8 backup. A little background first: We are running vSphere 5.0 with HP Lefthand iSCSI storage. We have about 450 VMs running on our production clusters and every morning roughly 30-60 are flagged "Needs Consolidation". Many of these VMs are repeat offenders. I have found nothing in particular that would be common to all the problem VMs. We have engaged VMware and CommVault tech support. CommVault's position is that they properly call the VMware API and get no indication of a failure. VMware's position is that they cannot manually reproduce the problem so they haven't come to a resolution. That said, both companies are very willing to continue pursuing the problem. Every morning I complete all the Consolidation Needed issues which does not clean up the orphaned deltas. Lst week I went though one cluster and manually deleted all the orphan deltas (some 3000 of them). The next morning the problem continued and I have a new, smaller set of orphans due to the time frame in which they appeared being a few days instead of several months.
