As I was interested in how this exactly looks like, I installed ESXi on an USB stick. The default scratch location is "/tmp/scratch". I'm still unsure why you still see the logs after a reboot though!?...

You're right, it doesn't.  I checked the first few characters and the last bunch after the dash and those matched up, but the full string doesn't.  That's a lesson on why you shouldn't take shortcuts...
